Running waters

In Germany, hydropower is a proven renewable source in the field of energy production. Located at numerous rivers and valley reservoirs, turbines or water wheels convert the water’s natural flow into mechanical energy. Generators then convert it into electrical energy. Hydropower thus contributes to a clean, decentralised energy supply and plays an important role in the energy system. With geographically suitable sites almost exhausted, research funding focuses on the modernisation of existing plants and the development of innovative water wheels. Technological innovations and the modernisation of turbines and generators can further raise efficiency and availability.

At the same time, the demands for ecologically compatible use of hydropower are rising. In this area, technological innovations can make an important contribution towards enhancing the ecologically compatible design of hydropower plants.
