With the publication of its new energy research programme, which is entitled “Innovations for the Energy Transition”, the German government has updated the guidelines for its energy research policy for the seventh time. These have been updated regularly since 1977. An important aim of the 7th Energy Research Programme is to improve the transfer of technology and innovation.

So-called real-world laboratories play an important role here. Projects funded under this title should be thematically more comprehensive than previous demonstration projects. Real-world laboratories should make it possible to test and evaluate the functional and system suitability of new technologies after the prototype phase. Another important innovation of the 7th Energy Research Programme is to enable start-ups to gain better access to research funding.

The Federal Economic Affairs and Energy, Education and Research as well as Food and Agriculture ministries are involved in the funding activities derived from the energy research policy guidelines. The German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy funds applied energy research projects, including the research topics in the power generation technologies field presented on this portal.

Until 2022, the 7th Energy Research Programme – Innovations for the Energy Transition will receive around 6 billion euros in funding from the German government. This will further increase the total volume of funding for projects by partners from research, industry and society.
