Hydrogen plays a key role in the transformation of the energy system. The German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) is now funding research in this field.

Hydrogen has the potential to contribute decisively to the decarbonisation of the current energy system and hence also to meeting the Paris Climate Agreement. For green hydrogen to become economically viable, however, the costs of hydrogen technologies must be reduced in all areas, from production and transport to storage and use. With its funding call, the BMWi is therefore soliciting proposals for research and development projects in these and other fields. The deadline for the submission of outlines is 30 April 2021.

Joint projects are particularly sought after

Applications may be submitted by commercial enterprises with a permanent establishment or branch in Germany, as well as universities and non-university research institutions with research and development capacities in Germany, regional bodies or public administration institutions, associations, federations and foundations. With this funding call, the BMWi also specifically encourages small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and start-ups to actively participate in collaborative projects.

With the funding call as a contribution to applied energy research, the BMWi supports the implementation of the National Hydrogen Strategy. This was adopted by the Federal Government in June 2020.
